Karrie is our newest Hot•Head!

24 01 2010

Courtney- here is my story from yesterday afternoon. Wanted to share it with you all.

Hello Hot Heads!

Yesterday, I received a phone call from a man I work with. I’m really good at not answering work calls on the weekend but something told me to answer this one. This conversation led me to meet an amazing little girl, Karrie, at Blair E. Batson. I was told Karrie watches Mississippi Outdoors and mentioned to her father that she would like to meet me one day. Wow. I was extremely honored.

I quickly gather up Mississippi Outdoors shirts, hats, bags, and other things to take to her. Then it hit me! She needs a Hot Heads hat. I run to Courtney’s house and we pick out the cutest hat for Karrie.

Karrie loved all the goodies I brought her. Especially her Hot Heads hat. As I hand her the large bag full of stuff, she grabs the Hot Heads hat first. I tell her the story around that hat and she could not stop smiling. Next thing I know, she is on the computer reading your blog.

As Karrie struggles in her battle with cancer at the age of 12, she still dreams of being on the high school basketball and softball teams. Karrie loves the outdoors and hunting. Karrie touched my life. I am forever blessed to have met such a strong young lady. Please remember Karrie and her family during this difficult time.

Please let Karrie be an encouragement to all knitters. Each hat that is given out is going to someone special. Each knitter is a blessing.

Thanks!
Amanda Mills

Navajo Reservation receives Hot•Heads!

13 01 2010
Dear Courtney,
Thanks for letting me share my experience and heart! If I ever get any photos of Navajo kids in their hats, I’ll be sure to share them with y’all, of course! :) Sam
I truly don’t know what possessed me to think I could make 25 hats in little more than a month. All I know is that I read in (my home church) Parkway Heights UMC’s newsletter about the annual Navajo stocking drive, then found myself thinking, “I want to make hats to put in those stockings!” I’m sure God has His hand in it, along with the knowledge that ANYTHING can happen when it coming to knitting hats for those in need, thanks to all the Hot Heads ladies. This year the stockings would go to the kids of Aneth United Methodist Church in Aneth, Utah, which is on the Navajo reservation, and part of the Four Corners Native American Ministry. I have been blessed to participate in mission work to our Navajo brothers and sisters with a vibrant mission group from Parkway Heights. A true sister-church relationship and lasting friendships have blessed those of us who have made our way west, getting to know these amazing, giving people of God.
The thing about this wonderful hat insanity we Hot Heads girls participate in, is the realization that a warm hat won’t solve the big problems. People in need still need food, need shelter, need help with everyday life. We know that. Still, by creating handmade hats, using every color under the rainbow, we are able to give the gift of a warm head to deal with the struggle of living. Infusing a little beauty into a life that may be lacking much beauty. Giving a gift of love that says, “I think you are important enough – to me, to God – to be warm, to have something lovely in your life.”
Sometimes, I drove myself a little crazy with these hats. I tried to make really cute ones, especially for the girls. For the boys, I kept it simple, with stripes, in masculine colors. Still, I pictured them hating the hats, maybe, or making fun of each other. Maybe I had it all wrong. Maybe they would be ashamed of them. Maybe they already had a hat.
Along the way, I had to let it go. Worrying about someone not liking their hat wasn’t my job. Putting too much pressure on myself was ridiculous. God could take care of all that, I figured. I had to let go of fretting over someone getting a too small or too big hat. If a loving, creative God could inspire me to lovingly create something for one of his Children, then He could make sure it got to the right person. End of story.
My sweet Mama also learned to knit, just to help me with this project. I mean, the woman had SURGERY and still knitted hats, probably on painkillers. What a woman! I am especially glad she knitted a few hats because towards the end there, I was losing steam. Because of her, we had enough hats for the names on my list, and few extra, totalling 25 in all.
When it came time to pack up the hats, I wrote little notes on Christmas tags. Thomas (my 2 year old) was clinging to me and climbing up my back and making my usually nice handwriting rather NOT nice, but on each one I wrote, “I made this hat just for you. Merry Christmas!” Then it went in a huge stocking, big enough to fit a giant’s leg. They made their way across the country, through the snow and the desert and endless skyscrapers of rock that make my heart sing. Each one, I pray, found a head, and that head, I hope, is blessed by it, just to know that someone made something beautiful just for them.
It also my hope that some Hattiesburg people will catch the HotHeads fever! If anyone is interested, I often travel home to Hattiesburg for short stays and I would be happy to meet with anyone who wants to learn to knit on the loom! There are so many avenues to help people in need, and Hattiesburg is such a hub for people needing help, and have great ministries to funnel efforts (Christian Services, Salvation Army, The Lighthouse (in Petal) and Edwards Street Fellowship, just to name a few). Let’s get the knitting fever going during this cold winter!

Sam,
thank you for sharing your heart!  What a tremendous story!  Knit on, girl!  Knit on!
