This cute sunflower pattern was taken from loomlady.blogspot.com. Wanted to share it with you….try it and see what you come up with!
To make this sun motif, I used two strands held as one of Red Heart Super Saver in Aran for the center and one strand in Gold for the petals. The twelve stitches of the LMC are doubled on the third row differently from the Watermelon Coaster. The Row 3 stitch sequence for each of the twelve stitches in the LMC are knitted as follows on two pegs of any large gauge Knifty Knitter Loom – I used the 48-peg Purple Hat Loom and worked in the back loops of the stitches:
Center
Rows 1 & 2: The Loomer’s Magic Circle (LMC) as described in theWatermelon Coaster Tutorial forms the first two rows.
Row 3: Add the beginning loop to the right peg, wrap and knit off three times. This forms the beginning stitch.
Still working in the first base stitch, place this loop on the left peg, wrap and knit off three times. Work a lifted bind off stitch as described in the Watermelon Coaster Tutorial. You now have completed two stitches in the back loop of the first LMC stitch.
Lift the back loop of the next LMC stitch and place it on the left peg. *(Wrap and knit off three times; work the lifted bind off.) Place the same LMC stitch back on the left peg and repeat (*) once for a total of two stitches in the first LMC stitch.
Repeat Step 4 for the remaining ten LMC stitches. End by hooking the last loop through the back loop of the first stitch. You should have 24 stitches for this row.
Row 4: Work as for Row 3, but only increase every other stitch for a total of 36 ending stitches. End row as in Step 4 and tie off.
Petals
Form a slip knot with one strand of the gold yarn and attach it in the back loop anywhere along the white edge. Wrap and knit off once.
Lift the next back loop and place it on the left peg. (Note: The next five stitches will be worked in this same loop): *Wrap and knit off 3 times; work a lifted bind off. Repeat from * five times, but wrap and knit off 5 times on the third stitch – this forms the pointed petal.
(Lift the next back loop, wrap and knit off once) repeat once.
Repeat steps 2 & 3, ending with one single wrap stitch and tie off. There should be thirteen petals (lucky, lucky).
I’m so excited to let you know that Hot•Heads have arrived in Perm, Russia! Janet has sent some pics and updated us on the details. I hope that you see your hat in the pics and know how important your contribution is! Knit on!
God’s timing is Perfect!
This morning as I woke up to windy, cold, 13 degree temperatures and slicker than slick icy sidewalks outside, I was excited about what the day had in store for me.
I had several things planned: Speaking at the Medical University Bio Ethics Class, Visiting a shelter for Women AND picking up a package from the post office !
MEDICAL UNIVERSITY: This was an opportunity I had been praying about to meet new students!!! I invited the entire class over to my apartment next Thursday and they said they would come – they even asked me my favorite Russian food (Cherry Vareniki) and promised to make and bring me some! This will give me an opportunity to build new relationships!!!
After the university, Katya and I tried to go to the Women’s Shelter but the Director had left the city for the week so we were unsuccessful in our attempt to visit with him. However she still had enough time before her evening class so we decided to visit the Homeless shelter.
Neither of us knew the street number of the Homeless shelter but I knew where it was physically located. It was cold so I decided we needed to take a taxi. As we waited on the street for the taxi it started SNOWING! As we were waiting, I couldn’t help but wonder where the homeless people might be on a day like this. Even though the temperature has warmed up to 25 degrees and still snowing as I write this…the weather is not as harsh (-30F below ). Regardless, homeless, is homeless.
Our taxi arrives and of all the taxi drivers in Perm they could have sent us – Igor knows the address of the Homeless shelter and begins telling us how the homeless people who beg at the churches only use the money for drugs, alcohol, cigarettes and Igor doesn’t seem to have a very good attitude towards them. I start to ask Igor if he has ever read the Bible to which he replies that he has. After reading the Bible he says that he read the Koran. Wow I replied. I asked Igor what he thought about both books and he said that they were both exactly the same – that they taught people how to live their lives.
Katya and I explained to him that the books were NOT the same and that God wrote the Bible and that other people wrote the Koran. We told Igor that Jesus would go to the Homeless and feed them and that was why we were going and you could hear Igor’s attitude changing. He took us right to the door and waited outside for us as we went inside.
I could write five or six pages here about how God blessed our time with the Director of the Shelter and Igor but I’ll save that for my newsletter. Long story short, we are going on April 4th to take food, Hot Heads (for Hope*) and show the Jesus film to the Homeless because of your sacrifice and obedience! I WILL send pictures!!!
POST OFFICE: Oh how I LOVE going to the Post Office! Getting packages here is SUCH A TREAT!!!
I usually only get the weekly DVD sermon videos from Pinelake and a few boxes from other friends…
BUT TODAY I had NO IDEA that my package was from HOT HEADS!!!
Brad took me to the post office in the van because we knew I had a heavy package (they wrote on the slip that it weighed 7.6 kilograms). As I was getting out of the van, I was so excited that I fell on the ice and BUSTED it ! (I thought those of you who know me would appreciate that picture)
I had filled out the usual form to pick up my package – here you have to fill out your U.S. Passport information (in Russian) and then stand in the slowest moving line… (we were behind 5 people) with ONE window open (kind of sounds like the states when I think about it) and then hopefully get your package.
When the lady came with my package, it was inside a giant white bag that looks like what horse feed comes in and then secured with a big white zip tie. Brad says, “Janet, it’s the HOT HEADS”!!!!! We got so excited!!! Of course, Brad contains himself and I’m jumping up and down…
She weighs it so we can see nothing has been taken out of it since it was mailed to me and then I have to write (Brad does it for me) that I received one package and then FINALLY I can take my package and leave!
Brad shoulders the box and I try to stay upright as we head back to the van and drive back to my apartment with the Hot Heads (for Hope*)
Thank you from the bottom of my soul for helping our ministry here in Perm by sending us some of your heart and lives. We will use the hats to share Christ and the Hope that is in the Life Eternal that He brings. I promise to serve you the best I can with my life and the Truth of the Gospel.
I am going to pray over every single hat and thank God for each of you and for each person who will receive a hat because of your time and service.
Love and grateful,
Janet Holloway

(I call them Hot Heads for Hope) because HOPE is so vital to me!
Hey guys. Sorry, but we are going to have to reschedule the sit ‘n knit for this Thursday night. We have a couple of people out of town and baseball games. We apologize for any inconvenience and promise to reschedule soon. We will post asap with the new dates.
Thanks so much! Keep knitting. You guys are making progress on the Survivor hats! We still need atleast 100 more! Remember, any combo of black, white and hot pink and any brim.
Also, here are a few good guidelines. If you are making a folded brim, then knit 14 rows and then turn up for a 7 row brim. Then knit 22 rows above the folded brim.
For a roll brim, knit 30 rows.
For a garter stitch, knit 8 to 10 rows of garter and then knit 20 to 22 rows above the garter.
This is my friend Roxanne’s baby, Ruby Adeline. I know, too cute. We found out yesterday (the day of her birth) that Minnie Driver sings a song called Ruby Adeline. Yes, it was a bit surreal. Anyway, I can’t resist showing these pics of this precious thing in her Hot•Head (designed by Amelia).
Be sure to remember (and pass along) that Hot•Heads make perfect baby gifts! Buy one, give one.
